The Prosecutor General's Office of Georgia has arrested Domenti (Dito) Chubinidze, a representative of the Asaval-Dasavali newspaper, on charges of treason, specifically sabotage, based on a court ruling.
22 October, 2026
As is known to the public, since February 2026, Domenti Chubinidze, using various media outlets and social platforms, has been systematically spreading false and disinformation and, based on fabricated facts, claiming that the Prime Minister of Georgia transferred part of the David Gareji monastery complex to the Republic of Azerbaijan under a secret agreement signed with a neighboring state.
The investigation conducted by the Prosecutor General's Office of Georgia has unequivocally confirmed that the state border is determined by an international treaty or agreement concluded with a neighboring state, which subsequently requires ratification by the Parliament of Georgia, and the authority to conduct negotiations and resolve issues of determining and establishing the border is exclusively vested in the Governmental Commission for the Delimitation and Demarcation of the State Border of Georgia. Within the framework of the mandate of the Governmental Commission, no agreement has been reached with the neighboring state regarding the determination and establishment of the border in the section of the David Gareji Monastery Complex, and the above-mentioned normative procedure theoretically excludes the possibility of the Prime Minister of Georgia unilaterally transferring the territory to another state.
Despite the above, in order to create a realistic perception in society regarding the fabricated story of the transfer of state territory to a neighboring state, devoid of any legal basis, Domenti Chubinidze repeatedly linked the death of his respondent, Lazare Jorbenadze, to a murder on the grounds of revenge, which was allegedly caused by Lazare Jorbenadze's disclosure of incriminating information to the Prime Minister.
By this action, Domenti Chubinidze intentionally committed sabotage to the detriment of the legitimate interests of the Georgian state, thereby preventing the normal functioning of a state agency and the Government Commission for the Delimitation and Demarcation of the State Border of Georgia.
Based on the evidence obtained as a result of the investigation, Domenti Chubinidze will be charged with treason, specifically sabotage, which carries a penalty of up to 4 years in prison.
The Prosecutor's Office shall apply to the court within the time limit established by law with a request to use imprisonment as a preventive measure against the accused.
The investigation into the case is ongoing and we will provide the public with additional information about its progress and results.
