Court Sentenced Accused of Murder in Group and Damaging and Destroying Property of Another to 14 Years of Imprisonment

The Tbilisi City Court found G.G. and M.K, who had been accused of a murder in group, committing arson for damaging and destroying property of another causing significant damage, guilty under the Criminal Code of Georgia, Article 109, second part, subsection “e” and Article 187, second part.
The evidence assessed during the trial proved that, on 9 April 2017, during the evening hours, G.G. and M.K., for murdering the grandfather of the latter – J.K., arrived at his residence in Tbilisi and stabbed him multiple times on several parts of the body of J.K. After fulfilling this plan, for covering up their acts, they set the house on fire and fled the scene.
Law-enforcers arrested M.K. on 11 May 2017 and G.G. on 12 May 2017 in Tbilisi. They were charged under the Criminal Code of Georgia, Article 109, second part, subsection “e” and third part, subsections “b” and “c” (murder committed in a group with extreme brutality and for mercenary purposes) and Article 187, second part (damaging or destroying property of another which caused a significant damage committed by arson). Imprisonment was used as a prevent measure against them.
The Tbilisi City Court found the accused guilty under the Criminal Code of Georgia, Article 109, second part, subsection “e” (murder committed in a group) and Article 187, second part (damaging or destroying property of another which caused a significant damage committed by arson) and, based on cumulative crimes, sentenced each to 14 years of imprisonment. The prosecution is planning to appeal this decision.
