Court Sentences Defendants to Deprivation of Liberty for a Term of 5 Years for Extortion in Large Quantities

Tbilisi City Court fully upheld the evidence submitted by the prosecution, and, found defendants G.G., G.O. and B.D. guilty of extortion committed by more than one person for the purpose of obtaining property in large quantities under Article 181 §2 (a) and (c) of the Criminal Code of Georgia.
Evidence examined in the course of the trial show that in the month of November, 2016, G.G., G.O. and B.D. met J.M in the city of Rustavi, physically and verbally abused the latter, demanded USD 23 600 from J.M. for the purpose of obtaining property in large quantities, and threatened to kill him if he failed to do so. Defendants had been contacting J.M on a systematic basis since then, and, had been demanding timely delivery of the amount from him.
Law enforcement officers detained G.G., G.O. and B.D. on February 8, 2017, in Tbilisi. They had been charged under Article 181 §2 (a) and (c) of the Criminal Code of Georgia (extortion committed by more than one person for the purpose of obtaining property in large quantities), whereupon detention had been applied against them as the measure of constraint.
Tbilisi City Court has found all three defendants guilty of the charges filed against them, and, sentenced each of them to deprivation of liberty for a term of 5 years in length as the type and size of penalty.
