Prosecutor’s Office Launches Investigation on the Basis of Questioning of the Members of Musical Duo ‘Birja Mafia’

Employees of the Prosecutor’s Office have interrogated the members of the Musical Duo ‘Birja Mafia’ – M.M. and G.K. – accused of alleged illegal purchase and storage of drugs in large quantities. Since the accused persons indicated to numerous alleged violations committed in course of their arrest by law enforcement officers during the interrogation, Investigation Unit of Tbilisi Prosecutor’s Office has launched investigation into the possible fact of exceeding official powers and fabrication of evidence committed by police officers under Article 3691§3 and Article 333§3(b) of the Criminal Code of Georgia.
For the time being, M.M. and G.K. are sentenced to remand detention as a measure of restraint which has been appealed by defence is Tbilisi Court of Appeals requesting to replace detention with a non-custodial measure of restraint. Considering the abovementioned circumstances as well as the fact that the defendants are willing to cooperate with the investigation and they do not have any previous conviction, Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia will assent to replace detention with a non-custodial measure of restraint.
Criminal prosecution cases of M.M. and G.K., which concern the alleged fact of illegal purchase and storage of drugs in large quantities, have been transferred from the Detectives Division of Tbilisi Police Department to Investigation Unit of the Prosecutor’s Office for further investigation.  
Society will further be informed about the result of the ongoing investigation.
